Okinawa Seasonal Activities

Okinawa spring activities

MAR – MAY · Spring

Cherry blossoms, gentle beach days, cultural tours

Kanhi-zakuraSnorkelingShuri Castle

Okinawa's cherry blossoms quietly open earlier than the mainland, in January and February, and by spring the islands are in full bloom. The sea begins to warm, making it a lovely time for snorkeling or a leisurely walk along the beach. With its mild climate, it is also a wonderful season to visit Shuri Castle and the Churaumi Aquarium.

Okinawa summer activities

JUN – SEP · Summer

Marine adventures, summer festivals, nightlife

Deep snorkelingSUPFireworks

Okinawa's high season, when turquoise waters invite you to coral-reef snorkeling, sea kayaking and every kind of marine activity. Across the islands you'll also find traditional Eisa dance festivals and summer fireworks — a chance to step gently into Ryukyu culture.

Okinawa autumn activities

OCT – NOV · Autumn

Slower travel, road trips, local flavours

Shuri Castle FestivalOuter islandsFarm experiences

As the tourist peak quietens, the islands become noticeably more spacious. October's Shuri Castle Festival, with its Ryukyu royal procession, is well worth seeing in person. The gentle weather also makes it an ideal season to drive through the Yambaru forests or take your time exploring Ishigaki Island.

Okinawa winter activities

DEC – FEB · Winter

Whale watching, hot springs, New Year traditions

Humpback whalesRyukyu New YearMarathon

From December through March, humpback whales travel through Okinawan waters, and a boat excursion to see them is a memory you will not find elsewhere. Winters here are notably milder than on the mainland, and the January Naha Marathon draws runners from across the country.

Travel Tips

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Tip

Typhoon Season

June through September is the peak of typhoon season in Okinawa. We kindly recommend checking the Japan Meteorological Agency forecast before you depart and leaving a little flexibility in your itinerary, as airports and flights can occasionally be affected.

Tip

Getting Around by Car

Public transport on the islands is somewhat limited, so renting a car tends to be the most comfortable way to explore. We suggest booking well in advance during peak season, and please remember that Japan drives on the left.

Tip

Swimming Season

The official swimming season runs from mid-April through October. July and August offer the most inviting water at around 29°C, with crystal-clear coral reefs that make for memorable snorkeling.

Tip

Local Flavours to Try

While you're here, we warmly encourage you to try Okinawa soba (sōki soba), taco rice, gōyā chanpurū — the classic bitter melon stir-fry — and the islands' beloved brown sugar sweets. Each is a quiet window into everyday Okinawan life.
